Resistances Fund. Grants for artists

definition of resistance funds: temporary initiatives based on solidarity that within a community, association or union serve to financially help those members who require this specific support.


The precarity of the artistic sector in Spain is a fact and every year a considerable number of creators leave the profession. Given the current health, social and economic crisis, it is possible that this trend will accelerate. What can we do to prevent it?

The Resistances Fund is a project initiated by the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation in early 2021 within the framework of the Foundation Recovery Plan, in collaboration with the association hablarenarte. The project is based on two strategic tools:

Direct grants: 20 grants of 2,500 euros each designed to support artists in their daily creative work, without asking for the production of work or other commitments in exchange.

Mutual support network: This network, in which the beneficiaries of the aid will participate as well as the different agents involved in the project (from the organizers, to the nominating artists and institutions), seeks to complement the financial aid with a series of material and immaterial resources.

The selection has been organized in two phases (for more details about the process, check here):

In the first phase, a peer nomination procedure was followed. Thus, the collaboration of six established artists from different disciplines and whose artistic practice stands out not only for its excellence but also for its ability to create ties with creators from other generations, was requested. These artists contributed altruistically to the project by pre-selecting a total of 30 possible beneficiaries of these grants.

The creators that contributed to the pre-selection process are: María Ruido (image/audiovisual), Cristina Pato (traditional musics), Niño de Elche (experimental music), Los Torreznos (performance), Teresa Margolles (visual arts) y Guillermo Weickert (dance).

In the second phase, the curricula and dossiers of the 30 nominated artists were distributed among the members of a committee of institutions to make the final selection.

The institutions that participated in this selection process are: Mª José Magaña (Visual Arts department, Instituto Cervantes), Ángeles Albert (Director Spanish Academy of Spain in Rome), Elena Carmona (artistic coordinator, Centro de Danza y Artes Vivas Graner), Tania Pardo (Subdirector CA2M), Alfredo Puente (curator, Fundación Cerezales Antonino y Cinia) y Fátima Sánchez (Director Centro Botín), as well as representatives from Fundación Carasso and hablarenarte.
