Course of Contemporary Humanities "Art History in Spain: discourses and future proposals"

Madrid

Centro Cultural La Corrala. Calle Carlos Arniches 3 and 5. Madrid

Within the framework of the research project HAR2012 – 32609, wherein hablarenarte: figures as Observing and Promoting Entity, the group "Contemporary Visual Culture" of the University Autónoma de Madrid organizes the Course of Contemporary Humanities Art History in Spain: discourses and future proposals.

With only reading the daily press, one can observe, that the professional practice of the art historian in Spain is undergoing an involution, mainly due to the media exposure of the art museums. The close relationship of the museums to the market, their insertion into the society of the spectacle, and the standstill of the basic education of art historians are resulting in a progressive estrangement between museums and the university. On the other hand public opinion considers that the academic training is not in accordance with the demands of our society, when the truth is that actually it’s the museum that has abandoned the scientific practice and ignores the protocols it entails. Moreover, the reconsideration of the artwork as an object of study and cultural artifact has greatly expanded the scope of action of art historians, facilitating interdisciplinarity, provoking a growing interest in non-European cultures and an increasing interest in actuality.

The curriculum of Art History does not offer spaces to address these issues and declines the debate, despite of an increasing demand by students, teachers and researchers. The course is part of the research project HAR2012 - 32609 , and is open to the public but is specifically designed for those who are interested in art history as a scientific discipline, its future possibilities in the society of knowledge and professional practice as art historian.
